Geely unveils 2.2MW ultra-fast EV charger that refuels 70% in under five minutes
Geely introduced a new 2.2MW charging system that can charge compatible EVs from 10% to 70% in about 4.5 minutes, using AI-based battery thermal management. The company also launched its Aegis Golden Brick battery technology, with a 6C version for the Galaxy E5. This positions Geely to compete with BYD's fast-charging technology in China's EV market.
The 2.25MW peak output through a single charging gun represents a significant technical leap, though real-world charging speeds depend on both vehicle battery chemistry and station capability. Geely's AI-driven thermal management system addresses the core engineering hurdle of megawatt-level charging, where heat buildup can degrade battery performance and safety. The company's dual-battery strategy—a 12C variant for premium models and a 6C version for the Galaxy E5—suggests tiered pricing across its lineup.
Geely's infrastructure push targets 100,000 charging guns by 2027, with over half designated as Smart Charge units. The company also extended battery warranties to eight years or 200,000 kilometers and plans charging credits for compatible vehicle buyers. These moves signal that automakers recognize hardware alone cannot win the charging race; deployment of compatible stations and consumer incentives are equally critical.
This technology could accelerate EV adoption by addressing range anxiety, one of the main barriers for mainstream buyers. If megawatt charging becomes widely available, it may shift consumer expectations and pressure competitors to match these speeds. However, the practical impact depends on infrastructure rollout, which could widen the gap between urban and rural charging access. Battery longevity under repeated ultra-fast charging remains a consideration for long-term owners, potentially influencing resale values and total cost of ownership.
