Verizon commits $70M to free AI training for Americans

Verizon launched a $70 million initiative called Verizon AI Skills for America, offering free AI training to job seekers, students, educators, small businesses, and career changers. The funding combines $20 million from its existing reskilling fund with $50 million in new money. The program will provide a single online portal with courses from IBM, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, Coursera, and OpenAI.
The funding structure combines $20 million redirected from Verizon's existing Reskilling and Career Transition Fund with $50 million in fresh capital, marking a significant expansion of the company's workforce development efforts. The program's single online portal will aggregate training materials from six major technology and education providers, creating a centralized access point for learners rather than requiring them to navigate multiple platforms.
Verizon has also enlisted community-based organizations including LISC, NACCE, and Goodwill Industries International to provide hands-on guidance and practical support. These groups will help participants translate training into real-world job applications and business outcomes. The program will initially launch nationwide with enhanced support services in select regional markets, with plans to refine the curriculum based on participant feedback as workplace demands evolve.
This initiative could meaningfully address the growing divide between workers who possess AI skills and those who do not, potentially affecting hiring outcomes across multiple industries. Job seekers and small business owners may gain a competitive edge through free access to credentials from major tech companies, while educators could integrate these resources into their teaching. However, the program's ultimate impact may depend on whether participants complete the training and whether employers recognize these credentials as meaningful qualifications in hiring decisions.
