Uruguay's Electric Vehicle Boom: Majority of New Cars Are Now Plug-In
In August, Uruguay's EV sales grew 171% year-over-year, approaching 4,000 units and setting a new record. EVs now account for 56% of total vehicle sales, with battery-electric models making up 51%. The market has rapidly transitioned from early adopters to majority adoption in just two and a half years.
The transition has been remarkably swift, with battery-electric models alone capturing 51% of August sales. BYD maintains its lead with a quarter of the market, though competitors like Geely and GAC are closing the gap. Notably, Tesla has yet to begin deliveries despite announcing competitive pricing, leaving room for further market disruption.
Uruguay's overall vehicle market grew 16% in the January–August period, yet combustion-powered cars have fallen 16% year-over-year and 20% compared to 2024. The government's planned 2027 import taxes on EVs—5% for models priced between $19,001 and $27,000, and 9% above that—may be prompting buyers to accelerate purchases before the levy takes effect.
Uruguay's rapid EV adoption could reshape transportation economics across Latin America, offering a potential template for neighboring markets. Consumers may benefit from lower long-term operating costs, while fuel retailers and maintenance industries could face declining demand. The impending 2027 tax change may have pulled forward sales, suggesting policy announcements can meaningfully influence consumer timing. However, Uruguay's small market size and uniquely high gasoline prices limit how directly its experience translates elsewhere.
