Google Wallet expands beyond payments with package tracking and TSA PreCheck integration
Google Wallet has added several new capabilities in 2026, including the ability to view online orders and track packages when Gmail tracking is enabled. The app also now supports TSA PreCheck Touchless ID at 65 U.S. airports, allowing travelers to use their phone instead of a physical ID. These features build on a major interface redesign and make the wallet app more versatile for everyday tasks.
The package tracking feature relies on Gmail's existing shipment detection, pulling detailed receipts and shipping status directly into the Wallet interface. The TSA PreCheck Touchless ID integration, announced in June, works by comparing a live checkpoint camera image against a traveler's stored digital ID, requiring both an ID pass and a saved boarding pass in the app.
The allowance feature, rolled out in August, lets parents send funds to a child's account on a recurring or on-demand basis, with payments restricted to in-person tap transactions only. Driver's license support now covers 11 states, with North Carolina expected to join by spring 2027. A September update also enabled NFC-based transit card transfers, expanding the app's utility for daily commuters.
This expansion could meaningfully reduce reliance on physical wallets for everyday Americans, particularly frequent travelers and parents managing children's spending. The TSA integration may shorten security lines at major airports, while package tracking consolidates e-commerce logistics into one app. However, digital ID adoption raises privacy considerations, as users must trust Google with sensitive personal data. The feature set could also deepen Google's ecosystem lock-in, potentially pressuring competitors like Apple to accelerate similar offerings.
