Valens and onsemi Team Up for Integrated Automotive Camera Sensor
Valens Semiconductor and onsemi have announced a partnership to create a cost-optimized 3-megapixel automotive camera sensor that integrates Valens' A-PHY connectivity technology into onsemi's image sensors. The collaboration is intended to accelerate adoption of the MIPI A-PHY standard among automakers and Tier 1 suppliers by simplifying camera architecture and reducing component count. The companies say the 3MP solution addresses both the existing mainstream market and an upgrade path to higher resolutions.
The collaboration targets the 1-3MP segment, where the majority of automotive image sensors currently sit. By embedding Valens' A-PHY connectivity directly into onsemi's sensor designs, the companies aim to eliminate separate components and streamline the overall camera architecture for high-volume vehicle programs.
MIPI A-PHY represents the automotive industry's first standardized approach to high-speed sensor connectivity. Valens has already shipped compliant chipsets and secured design wins with multiple automakers. Adding onsemi as a partner broadens the supplier base, giving manufacturers more options when adopting the standard and potentially accelerating its integration into mainstream vehicle platforms.
This collaboration could accelerate the adoption of advanced driver-assistance systems in mainstream vehicles by reducing the cost and complexity of camera integration. As more automakers standardize on A-PHY, consumers may see improved safety features become available across a wider range of price points. The simplified architecture could also shorten development cycles, potentially bringing new vision-based capabilities to market faster. However, the practical impact will depend on how quickly OEMs embrace the standard and whether the cost savings materialize at production scale.
