UN Report Calls Gaza's Economic Collapse Worst on Record
A UN report found that 92% of Gaza's economic establishments have been damaged or destroyed, with per capita GDP falling to about 58 cents a day. Unemployment reached 78% overall, and more than 90% of working-age adults are jobless. The report estimates that $71.5 billion is needed for reconstruction.
The report documents that Gaza's per capita GDP fell to $212 in 2025, an 83% drop from 2022, while consumer prices climbed 274% over the same period. Industrial and agricultural output each declined by 94%, construction fell by 99%, and less than 1.5% of cropland remains accessible and undamaged, leaving the population almost entirely reliant on humanitarian food aid.
UNCTAD's $71.5 billion reconstruction estimate exceeds earlier assessments from the World Bank, European Union, and United Nations, which had placed physical infrastructure damage at $35.2 billion and economic and social losses at $22.7 billion as of early 2026. The agency also cited 59 years of Israeli occupation as imposing structural constraints that have systematically limited Palestinian economic productivity and deepened aid dependence, alongside direct wartime destruction.
This report could reshape international donor priorities and diplomatic negotiations, as the scale of destruction demands unprecedented reconstruction funding that may strain global aid budgets. Gaza's two million residents face generational economic displacement, with near-total unemployment and poverty likely to drive continued instability.
