Paxos Unveils PAXGy Token to Earn Yield Through Gold Leasing
Paxos Labs has introduced PAXGy, a token backed by PAX Gold that channels reserves into institutional gold leasing to generate returns measured in gold ounces. The product aims to move beyond passive gold exposure by putting the underlying asset to work in the leasing market. This initiative links tokenized assets with an established physical commodities activity.
The token's design marks a departure from typical tokenized gold products, which generally track the metal's price without actively using the underlying reserves. PAXGy instead routes those reserves into lending arrangements with institutional counterparties, a practice long established in physical commodities markets. Returns accrue in gold ounces rather than fiat terms, meaning holders' positions are intended to grow in gold-denominated value over time.
The structure ties the product's performance to two factors: the market behavior of gold itself and the success of the leasing strategy. Because PAXG remains the referenced asset, the new token builds on Paxos' existing infrastructure while adding an active yield component. This places the launch at the intersection of blockchain-based commodities and traditional institutional lending activity.
This launch could broaden how retail and institutional holders approach tokenized commodities, offering a way to earn returns without selling gold exposure. If the leasing strategy performs well, it may attract investors seeking yield in a market where passive gold holdings generate nothing. However, leasing introduces counterparty and operational risks that passive tokens avoid, so outcomes depend on Paxos' execution and market conditions. The product could also pressure competitors to develop similar yield-generating structures.
