Chuncheon Peace Walk Draws 500 for UN Day and Taekwondo Championships
The 2026 Chuncheon Peace Walk took place on September 17, covering 4 kilometers from Songam Sports Town to Uiam Skywalk, to mark the 45th UN International Day of Peace and the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. Over 500 participants, including athletes from 85 countries and local residents, joined the event. The walk featured taekwondo demonstrations and virtual reality experiences.
The 4-kilometer route connected the Songam Sports Town inline skating rink with the Uiam Skywalk, drawing a crowd that included international taekwondo competitors, GCS International members from multiple nations, and local residents. The walk concluded with commemorative keyrings for finishers, followed by a WT Performance Team demonstration and interactive virtual taekwondo experiences alongside live poomsae matches.
This marked the first peace walk hosted in Korea since the 2018 Jeju World Peace Walkathon, which preceded the Jeju Korea Open Taekwondo Championships that year. Organizers confirmed the Chuncheon event will now become an annual tradition. Separately, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new World Taekwondo headquarters took place on September 15, with construction slated for completion by June 2028.
This event could strengthen Chuncheon's identity as a global taekwondo hub while reinforcing the sport's diplomatic role in fostering international goodwill. The participation of athletes from 85 countries may enhance cross-cultural understanding among local residents and visitors alike.
