Walmart heiress Alice Walton's fortune grows by $33 billion as she focuses on philanthropy

Alice Walton's net worth increased by $33 billion between March 2025 and March 2026, reaching nearly $120 billion, largely due to her Walmart stake. She has never run the company but co-manages family holding entities. Walton is funding a tuition-free medical school in Arkansas and a new hospital.
Walton's financial profile is unusual among billionaires in that she never held executive power at the retail giant her father founded. Her wealth flows through Walton Enterprises and the Walton Family Holdings Trust, which together control roughly two-fifths of Walmart's shares. Her direct holdings are comparatively modest at about 20 million shares, valued near $2.2 billion.
Her medical philanthropy extends beyond the tuition-free school. The Alice L. Walton Foundation committed $350 million to build a 250-bed hospital and cancer center in Bentonville, developed alongside Mercy and Cleveland Clinic. The first facility, a cardiac specialty center, is expected to open in 2029. The medical school's first cohort of 48 students arrived in 2025, with a second class bringing enrollment to 96.
Walton's growing fortune and simultaneous philanthropic focus could reshape healthcare access in rural Arkansas, a region often underserved medically. By funding free medical education and building hospital infrastructure, she may influence how future physicians are trained and where they choose to practice. Her model—combining art, medicine, and technology—could inspire other wealthy donors to fund similar initiatives, though the long-term sustainability of tuition-free programs and new hospitals will depend on ongoing financial commitment and community demand.
