FA orders replay of FA Cup tie after referee mistake
Mulbarton Wanderers must replay their FA Cup qualifying match against Woodford Town after a referee's error led to a protest. The original match ended 2-1 to Mulbarton, but the FA ruled the penalty should have been retaken. The replay is scheduled for 29 September.
The replay stems from a 30th-minute incident in which Woodford's penalty was scored but disallowed because attacking players encroached. The referee awarded Mulbarton an indirect free-kick, yet Law 14 mandates a retake in such situations. The FA sub-committee deemed this a technical error, reversing the initial dismissal of Woodford's protest.
Mulbarton, an eighth-tier Norfolk club, expressed frustration that the ruling is final with no appeal available. The winners of the 29 September replay will host Gloucester City in the third qualifying round on 3 October. This follows prior instances of replays ordered due to officiating mistakes, including a 2006 non-league case and last season's FA Vase replay.
This ruling could affect how lower-league clubs perceive the finality of match results, potentially eroding confidence in officiating at grassroots levels. Clubs investing limited resources in FA Cup runs may feel vulnerable to retroactive decisions, while the precedent might encourage more protests over technical infringements.
