F-Droid 2.0 introduces a redesigned interface built with Kotlin Compose and Material Design, featuring three main tabs: Discover, Search, and My Apps. The new search system can find apps using descriptions, categories, and translated content, improving discovery. The update aims to make finding and updating open-source apps easier for users.
F-Droid 2.0 marks the store's first significant interface overhaul in years, shifting to Kotlin Compose and Material Design. The new three-tab layout separates discovery, search, and installed app management, while the upgraded search engine now scans descriptions, categories, and translated content — with particular improvements for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean queries. The EU's Digital Markets Act enables a unified installer for all apps.
Some privacy features are being adjusted. The panic trigger no longer removes apps, only disguises the store's name and icon, and it remains detectable in system settings. Tor support now routes through generic proxy settings, with the team recommending Tor VPN instead. Manual update checks moved behind a menu button, and the final build is still pending — only an alpha is available.
This redesign could meaningfully lower the barrier for casual Android users exploring open-source software, since improved search and a cleaner interface make F-Droid feel less intimidating. However, the reduced panic functionality may concern users in high-risk environments who relied on rapid app removal. The automatic update system could improve security for existing users, though the trade-off in manual control may prompt some to hesitate before upgrading.
