Kauai Property Owners Face Sept. 30 Tax Exemption Filing Deadline
The County of Kauai's Real Property Division reminds property owners that the deadline to file for real property tax exemptions is Sept. 30, with no extensions. The Sept. 30 deadline arrives amid ongoing recovery from Hurricane Lowell, which forced the Real Property Division into temporary quarters after a Sept. 9 fire at the Kapule Building. Staff have stationed themselves at hurricane resource centers in Hanalei and Koloa through the filing period, and the office will keep weekend hours to accommodate displaced residents.
Property owners can file home exemptions online, email other exemption forms, or use drop boxes at two county buildings. Tax payments are accepted in person, online with a service fee, or by mail. Officials note voicemail is currently nonfunctional, directing residents to email for assessment or billing questions.
This deadline could place added strain on Kauai property owners still recovering from hurricane damage, particularly those displaced or without reliable internet access. The county's expanded outreach—weekend hours and resource center presence—may ease the burden for some, but those unaware of the temporary office location or email-only communication could risk losing exemptions.
