Kauai Mayor Proclaims Forensic Science Week, Recognizes KPD Team
Mayor Derek Kawakami issued a proclamation honoring the Kauai Police Department's Crime Scene and Laboratory Section during National Forensic Science Week, Sept. 20-26. The proclamation specifically names three KPD staff members: Michaelyn Etrata, Criminalist III; Dr. Christian Vlautin, Criminalist II; and Sara Ormsby, Crime Scene Specialist Trainee. Their duties span documenting and preserving scenes, processing evidence, recovering fingerprints, gathering DNA, and photographing details. The recognition aligns with National Forensic Science Week, Sept. 20-26, organized with the Consortium of Forensic Science Organizations.
Chief Rudy Tai emphasized the team's long hours and difficult scene work, calling their expertise invaluable. The ceremony included KPD Assistant Chief Makana Rivera and Managing Director Reiko Matsuyama, underscoring county-level appreciation for the section's behind-the-scenes contributions to criminal justice.
