EPA registers new dual-mode soil insecticide Bifender Duo
The EPA has granted federal registration to Bifender Duo, a soil insecticide that combines bifenthrin with a biological active ingredient from ProFarm. Developed by Vive Crop Protection, the product offers two modes of action against soil insects and nematodes. It is a restricted-use pesticide, and state registrations are expected before February 2027.
The registration marks a notable step in combining synthetic and biological chemistries within a single soil application. Bifender Duo leverages Vive's Allosperse Delivery Technology to stabilize the formulation, while ProFarm's biological ingredient received its own EPA clearance in 2025. Because the product is classified as a restricted-use pesticide, applicators must hold proper certification and follow label requirements.
Vive has already submitted registration requests to individual states, targeting approval in key agricultural markets before February 2027. The dual-mode design addresses grower demand for broader pest coverage, particularly against soil-dwelling insects and nematodes, which can cause significant damage to root systems and reduce crop yields across multiple commodity types.
This registration could give growers a new tool for managing soil pests while reducing reliance on single-mode chemistries, potentially slowing resistance development. Farmers facing nematode pressure may gain an integrated option that pairs a familiar synthetic with a biological component. However, restricted-use classification means smaller operations without certified applicators may face barriers, and the product's commercial impact will depend on state approvals and pricing relative to existing soil insecticide programs.
