Third-Party Camera Apps Unlock Finer Aperture Control on iPhone 18 Pro
The iPhone 18 Pro’s variable aperture is limited to four settings in Apple’s native camera app. Third-party apps like BlackMagic Camera and Moment Pro Camera II now offer ten aperture presets with finer 1/3-stop increments. The extra control may be subtle on a small sensor, but it gives photographers more manual options.
Apple's native iOS camera app restricts the iPhone 18 Pro's variable aperture to four manual choices: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4. The same four values appear when auto aperture adjusts the iris. However, Apple's SDK permits third-party developers to go further.
BlackMagic Camera, a free iOS app, added adjustable aperture support in version 3.5, which testers called buggy before version 3.5.1 improved stability. Moment's $12.99 Pro Camera II followed, offering ten presets from f/1.48 to f/4.0 in 1/3-stop steps. Because the iPhone sensor is small, differences may be subtle.
This could matter most to mobile photographers and videographers who want manual exposure control, while casual users may see little change. Third-party developers may gain a selling point, and Apple could face pressure to expand native controls. The broader effect may be incremental: more granular aperture choices could encourage experimentation, but small-sensor limits mean mainstream social sharing likely remains unaffected.
