NYSERDA selects 21 projects totaling 1.7 GW in New York
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has awarded contracts for eight battery storage projects and 13 large-scale renewable energy projects. The selected projects represent 1.7 GW of new capacity and more than $3.7 billion in private investment, with 950 MW coming from batteries and over 719 MW from solar, onshore wind, and hydropower. The projects are expected to be operational by the end of 2030.
The awards split into eight lithium-ion battery installations and thirteen renewable generators. Battery projects account for 950 MW, with storage durations between four and eight hours. The renewable group adds more than 719 MW through solar, onshore wind, and hydropower. All are slated to begin operating by the close of 2030.
The battery selections came from NYSERDA's first large-scale storage solicitation, which drew 46 proposals representing roughly 6 GW. Named sites span Chautauqua, Allegany, Monroe, Ulster, Bronx, and Suffolk counties. Renewable contracts include solar, wind, and hydro projects across Greene, Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Wyoming, Franklin, Clinton, Steuben, Saratoga, and Oswego counties.
If built as planned, these projects could affect residents and workers across several counties by adding construction and operations jobs, changing local land use, and potentially improving grid reliability. Ratepayers may see long-term effects depending on project costs and benefits.
