Qualcomm Pushes On-Device AI Agents Across Devices at 2026 Snapdragon Event
Qualcomm used its 2026 Snapdragon Summit to frame agentic AI as the next computing model, spanning phones, PCs, wearables, cars and other personal devices. The company announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for AI smartphones and brought Snapdragon X2 to Linux PCs. An IDC analyst cautioned that the hardware for personal AI agents is arriving before the applications and user habits needed to make them mainstream.
At its 2026 Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm positioned agentic AI as a cross-device model rather than a phone-only feature. It introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for AI smartphones and extended Snapdragon X2 to Linux PCs, while discussing AI in glasses, watches, earbuds, cars and other personal hardware.
Qualcomm split its premium mobile line into Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, both built on 2nm and using Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU and Hexagon NPU. CEO Cristiano Amon described a move from app-led tasks to intent-driven agents. IDC’s Tom Mainelli warned that enabling hardware may arrive before mainstream apps and habits.
If personal AI agents spread across phones, PCs, wearables and cars, consumers may gain faster, more context-aware assistance that works with limited connectivity. Device makers and app developers could face pressure to redesign experiences around intent rather than separate apps. Privacy and trust may become central, since agents would need permissions and personal context. The shift could also widen gaps for people or regions with less access to advanced hardware, while IDC’s caution suggests adoption may depend more on useful services and new habits than on chip performance alone.
