IFDA Conference Stresses Human Element in Foodservice Tech Push
The 2026 IFDA Solutions Conference brought foodservice distribution stakeholders together to examine technology, leadership, and workforce readiness. Speakers said AI and predictive tools can improve operations, but a strong culture and skilled employees remain essential. The event also honored 108 truck drivers and marked the upcoming retirement of IFDA CEO Mark S. Allen.
The 2026 IFDA Solutions Conference, held Sept. 12–15 in San Antonio, merged the association’s Solutions and Smart gatherings for the first time. It convened equipment makers, solution providers, technology developers, and more than 30 distributor firms, with sessions spanning cybersecurity, warehouse operations, supply chain, and sales and marketing.
The event inducted 108 drivers into IFDA’s Truck Driver Hall of Fame and offered an early farewell to CEO Mark S. Allen, who will retire in early 2027 after 27 years with the group, including 22 as president and CEO. Speakers from Dot Foods, BiRite, Dawn Foods, and Ben E. Keith stressed culture, mentorship, and trust alongside AI adoption.
Foodservice distributors, their employees, drivers, and customers may feel effects as AI and predictive tools reshape operations. If companies pair automation with training and mentorship, workers could gain skills and safer, more stable roles; if not, job quality and trust may suffer. Honoring drivers and highlighting leadership suggests industry may increasingly compete on workforce culture, potentially influencing how food supply chains attract and retain talent.
