Equifruit earns fifth straight spot on Canada's Top Growing Companies list
Equifruit was recognized by The Globe and Mail as one of Canada's Top Growing Companies for a fifth consecutive year. The Montreal-based Fairtrade banana importer placed No. 230 in the Consumer category with 117% growth. Co-owner Jennie Coleman said the honor reflects the company's commitment to banana farmers.
Equifruit, based in Montreal, imports and markets Fairtrade-certified bananas and describes itself as North America’s leader in that segment. The Globe and Mail placed it at No. 230 among Consumer-category honorees, citing 117% growth, marking its fifth straight year on the list.
The company credits organic expansion in 2025 to retail partnerships, including Costco, Walmart and Pattison Food Group, as shoppers chose Fairtrade organic bananas. Co-owners Jennie Coleman and Kim Chackal also plan to attend the IFPA Global Produce and Floral Show in Orlando on October 15–16, during Fairtrade Month.
Equifruit’s continued growth may strengthen demand for Fairtrade-certified produce, potentially expanding premiums and market access for banana growers in supplier regions. Retail shoppers in Canada and the U.S. could see more Fairtrade organic options on shelves, while competing importers may face pressure to improve sourcing transparency. The company’s recognition may also encourage other food businesses to view ethical sourcing as compatible with expansion, though the scale of social and environmental effects would depend on how widely such practices spread.
