Fondation Beyeler Unveils Expanded Basel Art Campus with Peter Zumthor Building
Fondation Beyeler has begun a gradual preview of new campus spaces in Basel, including a museum building by Peter Zumthor, an event pavilion, offices, art-handling facilities, a greenhouse, and a listening salon. The expansion joins the existing Renzo Piano-designed museum and an 18th-century period structure. A full public opening is planned for January 2027.
The Wyss Museum, Peter Zumthor’s new exhibition building, is arranged over three open levels and built largely from Jura limestone. The stone appears as compacted walls, terrazzo floors, washed interior surfaces and bench slabs. Eleven builders worked two years on these elements, much by hand, while Zumthor checked that the material’s natural differences remained balanced.
At the campus center, the Ammann Pavilion uses timber, with cherry wood flooring. The expansion also introduces an event pavilion, offices, art-handling space, a greenhouse and a listening salon. These join Renzo Piano’s 1997 museum and an 18th-century structure. A gradual preview is underway, with full public opening planned for January 2027.
The expansion may strengthen Basel’s role as a cultural destination, drawing art-focused travelers and benefiting nearby hospitality, retail and transit. Local residents could gain new public amenities, including a greenhouse and listening salon, though crowds and construction-related changes may affect the neighborhood.
