Common Receives Inaugural Artist Impact Award From SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange
Common received the first Artist Impact Award from SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange at The Luckman Club/Soho West Hollywood. The honor recognizes artists whose work spans music, film, television and media and has influenced culture. Common said the recognition motivates him to continue using his platform to uplift others.
The inaugural Artist Impact Award was presented at The Luckman Club/Soho West Hollywood during a Thursday afternoon event on Sept. 24. SAG-AFTRA’s Duncan Crabtree-Ireland and SoundExchange’s Michael Huppe joined Common for a Billboard discussion before the honor, which recognizes creators whose output reaches across music, film, television and media.
The award grows from a partnership between SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange lasting more than twenty years. SoundExchange gives 5% of yearly collections—about $50 million—to SAG-AFTRA so non-featured performers such as background singers and session musicians receive digital-use royalties. Common, described as a musician, actor, author, producer, entrepreneur and advocate, said the recognition pushes him to do more.
The award may spotlight artists whose careers cross music, film, TV and media, potentially encouraging more boundary-spanning work. It could also draw attention to royalty systems that support background singers and session musicians, groups often less visible. For audiences and creative workers, such recognition may reinforce the value of interdisciplinary careers and fair compensation.
