Nursing Honor Society Removes Leader After Alleged Racist Messages

Sigma Nursing’s board ended Lucas Davis’s tenure as CEO after a video from Terace Garnier circulated messages that reportedly included racial epithets and sexualized references to slavery. Davis had been placed on leave on Sept. 14; the board voted to dismiss him before that week ended.
Davis became Sigma’s CEO in August 2024. Founded in 1922 as Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the group reports over a million members and 600 chapters worldwide. Its stated aim is developing nurse leaders globally to improve care everywhere. Nursing figures including Sunni Johnson-Strodes, Brenice Duroseau, and Krista Walker responded publicly, raising concerns about racism and accountability.
The removal may affect Sigma Nursing’s members, chapters, and the broader nursing field, who could face questions about trust and governance. Nurses of color, especially Black nurses, may see the episode as highlighting workplace racism concerns; some may press for clearer accountability. The wider healthcare sector could watch whether the organization’s response improves confidence or deepens scrutiny.
