Inside Objects of Common Interest’s Piraeus resin studio
Wallpaper’s Work in Process series visits the Piraeus workshop of Objects of Common Interest. Founders Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis moved from architecture into product and installation design, opening the Greek resin studio in 2022. The film looks at their hands-on experimentation and collaborative making.
Wallpaper*’s Work in Process episode profiles Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis at their Piraeus resin workshop. The architects first collaborated through LOT, included in Wallpaper*’s 2014 Architects Directory, before launching Objects of Common Interest in New York in 2016. They divide time between Greece and New York and were named Wallpaper*’s Design Awards Designers of the Year 2022.
The Piraeus studio opened in 2022 inside a two-storey, 800 sq m industrial building. Its equipment came from Ovidiu Colea, a Long Island City resin craftsman who met Petaloti and, before retiring, offered his machinery for relocation. The team now tests reusing resin in new moulds and works across cast-to-lucite manufacturing.
The Piraeus workshop may influence how design students, craftspeople, and small manufacturers view resin as a reusable material. By preserving an older artisan’s equipment and techniques, the studio could help sustain specialized making skills in Greece while connecting them to international product and installation markets. Audiences may encounter more experimental, circular resin objects, though the wider environmental and economic effects would depend on adoption, scale, and material lifecycle.
