SunLED Launches $249 Clip-On Near-Infrared Mood Device
SunLED has introduced a $249 clip-on device that emits 850nm near-infrared light from three LEDs. The 120-gram, USB-C-powered unit uses a presence sensor to turn off when the user leaves and is designed to provide a sunlight-like physiological effect without visible glow. It was co-founded by Anne Berends and Ayhan Siriner and won a 2026 iF Design Award in Medical and Healthcare.
SunLED grew out of founder Anne Berends’s contrast between Amsterdam’s roughly 1,600 annual sunshine hours and Los Angeles’s nearly 2,500. A nanomaterials scientist, she initially imagined near-infrared built into ceiling fixtures, but the physics defeated that plan: the effect depends on skin contact, and light dispersed from three meters away is wasted.
The final unit weighs 120 grams, measures 83mm across, uses aluminum and plastic, and draws USB-C power. Three 850nm LEDs operate invisibly. A presence sensor detects users between 30 and 100cm and shuts off when they leave; an app records weekly exposure. It costs $249 and won a 2026 iF Design Award in Medical and Healthcare.
Devices like SunBooster could affect desk-bound workers, especially those in northern latitudes with limited winter daylight, by offering a passive mood-support option that requires no visible ritual. Its $249 price may limit access, while invisible operation could make workplace use less conspicuous.
