Senate Democrats Seek Explanation From RFK Jr. Over Revised Ethics Filing
Congressional Democrats are asking Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to explain a reported change to his ethics agreement after his confirmation. Kennedy had pledged not to collect fees tied to litigation against makers of a cervical cancer vaccine and said he would transfer his financial interest to his son. Lawmakers say the stake was later moved to his former law firm, Wisner Baum, while HHS says he complied with his ethics agreement and held no financial interest in the litigation after taking office.
Democratic Sens. Warren, Wyden, Blumenthal and Alsobrooks asked Kennedy Thursday to explain the change. Before confirmation, he pledged to forgo fees from Gardasil litigation and give his stake to his adult son. HHS later said he assigned those interests to Wisner Baum, his former firm, where his son works. HHS maintains he complied and held no financial interest after taking office.
Kennedy's earlier testimony faced scrutiny over vaccine policy and a Samoa trip. His January 2025 disclosure allowed a 10% contingency fee on referred cases; after conflict warnings, he amended it to divest to his son. An August 25 letter said he instead irrevocably assigned outstanding fees to Wisner Baum. Senators question whether any future-payment arrangement exists.
The dispute may affect public trust in federal health leadership and vaccine-related decisions, especially among patients, clinicians, and vaccine makers. If questions about financial ties persist, they could complicate HHS messaging on immunization and ethics oversight. Lawmakers' scrutiny may also shape how future nominees disclose and resolve conflicts, though the practical impact depends on whether the allegations lead to formal review or new restrictions.
