GSA reports $1.2B in suspected pandemic contract fraud
The General Services Administration said it identified more than $1.2 billion in suspected fraud across five COVID-related contracts and halted an additional $41 million. The agency said contractors kept receiving funds after pandemic acquisition flexibilities ended in 2023, and it is working with HHS and a White House anti-fraud task force. Most of the contract money had not yet been paid out, and no criminal charges have been announced.
The GSA said five pandemic-era contracts are at issue, with more than $1.2 billion flagged as suspected fraud and another $41 million halted. Although COVID acquisition flexibilities ended in 2023, contractors allegedly kept drawing funds. The agency worked with HHS and the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud. Most money—about 93%—had not reached vendors; roughly 6.78% had been spent. Payments are suspended, and no criminal charges have been announced.
This follows GSA’s earlier report of $13 billion in suspected procurement fraud since March 2026. The administration’s fraud.gov ledger claims about $260.7 billion in fraud uncovered since January 2025, including $96.4 billion at HHS and $13.9 billion at GSA.
The findings could affect federal contractors tied to pandemic work, especially if payments remain suspended while reviews proceed. Taxpayers may benefit if improper spending is recovered, but lengthy investigations could also slow legitimate vendors and emergency preparedness. The case may shape how agencies monitor contracts after emergency authorities lapse, potentially increasing scrutiny and compliance burdens across government procurement.
