Target's Good & Gather Sugar Among Products in 1.7-Million-Pound Recall
A recall covering nearly 1.7 million pounds of brown and powdered sugar has been issued over possible wheat kernel contamination. The affected products include Good & Gather items sold at Target and United and Crystal Sugar brands. Consumers should check UPC, item numbers, and batch codes before using the sugar.
United Sugar Producers and Refiners, based in Minneapolis, issued the recall on Aug. 19. The FDA later classified it as Class II on Sept. 21. The company supplies sugar for roughly one-quarter of U.S. demand, so the recall spans grocery-size bags and commercial packaging.
The affected sugar was distributed in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. The recall covers about 1.27 million pounds of light brown sugar and 426,500 pounds of powdered sugar. Consumers should verify UPC, item number, package size, and batch code.
The recall could affect households with wheat allergies or celiac disease, who may not expect wheat in sugar. Shoppers in the eight states may need to check packaging before use, while retailers and commercial buyers could face extra verification and returns. Because the affected batch codes are limited, most sugar products may remain safe, but uncertainty could temporarily reduce confidence in the affected brands.
