Bima to renovate and rent 288 former military homes in Gütersloh
The Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben has begun taking back former British military housing in Gütersloh from the city. The portfolio covers 288 units, with the first brick terraced houses returned in summer 2026. The plan is to renovate the properties and rent them out, while some may again house refugees and no sale is currently planned.
The properties are 1950s brick terraced homes originally built for British forces personnel. After the military presence ended, the municipality used them chiefly as refugee accommodation. In summer 2026, Gütersloh began transferring the first of these units back to Bima, the federal real estate agency, which owns 288 dwellings in the city.
Bima manages former military housing and conversion sites across Germany. The returned homes are to be refurbished and let on the regular rental market, with some possibly used again for refugees. Officials reportedly have no immediate sale plans, and no timetable for the renovations has been disclosed.
