OpenAI said in June that it removed two sets of ChatGPT accounts probably based in China. Those accounts allegedly produced social media posts and images claiming data centers increase Americans’ electricity bills. Cruz argues that if China leads in AI, the technology will serve Communist Party priorities; if the U.S. leads, he wants American values embedded in it.
Cruz’s claims could intensify public scrutiny of AI data centers and foreign influence in tech policy. Lawmakers, technology firms, local communities, and voters may face sharper debates over energy costs, national security, and who shapes AI rules.
