Report: Xbox's Physint Budget Reportedly Reaches $400 Million

A report from The Game Business claims Xbox is funding Hideo Kojima's Physint with a budget near $400 million. If accurate, the project would rank among Xbox's most expensive published titles and Kojima's biggest production. The deal is part of Xbox's strategy under Asha Sharma to prioritize major bets and core franchises.
The report originates from Christopher Dring on The Game Business, who said Xbox inherited a struggling business. Dring noted that buying studios and pushing Game Pass did not produce the subscription growth Xbox expected, while console sales declined, margins stayed weak, and growth was absent. The revised approach favors large-scale projects and established franchises over a broad spread of smaller independent titles.
For scale, PlayStation's Wolverine and Spider-Man 2 were reportedly about $300 million and $315 million. Kojima has long chased movie-like scale and expensive production standards, and Metal Gear Solid 5's reported $80 million overrun contributed to friction with Konami. Death Stranding also did not reach the audience needed to be considered successful.
If the reported budget is accurate, the project could shape expectations across the games industry, affecting developers, publishers, and players. A $400 million bet may encourage more concentrated spending on blockbuster titles, potentially reducing room for smaller experimental games. Players might see fewer but larger exclusives, while workers could face greater job insecurity if such high-risk projects underperform. The outcome may influence how platform holders balance subscription growth, console sales, and creative risk.
