Google trials direct Flipkart purchases inside Gemini and AI Mode

Google is testing a Buy button for selected Flipkart products within Gemini and AI Mode in India. The limited trial covers certain users and items such as smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories, with a wider launch expected in October. The move shows Google pushing its AI services beyond product discovery into actual transactions.
Google is trying a checkout option inside its AI interfaces for some Flipkart items in India. The experiment reaches only certain users and product types, such as phones, electronics, and mobile add-ons. A broader release is expected in October, before India’s festive shopping period.
The trial follows Google’s earlier work on an open standard for AI agents to handle retail interactions, including payment steps. Google also holds a minority stake in Flipkart, having invested roughly $350 million in 2024. Rival Amazon listings in the same AI results did not show the direct purchase option.
If such in-AI buying expands, Indian shoppers may find fewer steps between discovery and checkout, potentially benefiting those already comfortable with digital payments. Flipkart and competing marketplaces could face new pressure over customer relationships and transaction data. Smaller retailers might gain visibility through AI assistants, or may depend on platform terms. The shift may also raise questions about consent, spending cues, and how purchases are surfaced, especially during high-traffic festive sales.
