China develops layered defenses to protect tanks from drone and top-attack strikes
China’s military is studying how cheap FPV drones and top-attack weapons have changed armored vehicle vulnerabilities, especially tank roofs. The PLA is pursuing layered defenses, including Norinco’s GL-6 active protection system and networked formations that combine reconnaissance drones, electronic warfare, and counter-drone tools. PLA Army researchers have also called for integrated warning, electronic countermeasures, and kinetic defenses against UAV swarms.
Ukraine showed that inexpensive FPV drones can strike tanks from above, exploiting roof armor. The PLA has studied how drone and high-angle attacks damage armored vehicles, prompting work on overhead protection. In early 2025, state media showed Norinco’s GL-6 active protection system defeating a descending threat while also engaging a side attack. Reports said it can counter drones, rockets, missiles and loitering munitions.
Norinco’s 2024 Zhuhai “intelligent combined brigade” concept links armor with reconnaissance drones, electronic warfare and counter-drone systems. A 2025 PLA Army study calls for warning, electronic countermeasures, kinetic defenses, camouflage and decoys against UAV swarms. Training also emphasizes hiding in roadside depressions, camouflage nets, track erasure and smoke.
This development may affect military planners, defense industries, and soldiers operating armor, as layered defenses could change procurement priorities and training. It may also influence how other states assess tank survivability against cheap drones, potentially accelerating counter-drone spending.
