Jon Watts Reportedly Tapped to Direct First Film in New Star Wars Trilogy
Disney has reportedly chosen Jon Watts to direct the opening installment of Simon Kinberg's new Star Wars trilogy, which is planned as the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga. Kinberg is writing the films, and Daisy Ridley's Rey Skywalker is expected to be part of the story. The project has not received an official green light yet, though it is reportedly further along than most other Star Wars films in development.
The report originated with Daniel Richtman and was later supported by The Hollywood Reporter. Watts is known for directing the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy and co-creating 2024’s Skeleton Crew. Kinberg, whose credits include Rebels and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is writing the films. Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker is expected to appear.
No official go-ahead has been issued, and Watts is attached only to the first installment. The project is reportedly farther along than most Star Wars features, except Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s Starfighter, set for May 28, 2027. Kathleen Kennedy previously said Kinberg’s treatment was detailed and expected in March.
If the report proves accurate, Star Wars fans and moviegoers could see the franchise’s next theatrical era shaped by a director known for superhero blockbusters. That may generate fresh interest in Rey’s story while also raising expectations and scrutiny among longtime followers.
