GTA 2 mod adds path tracing and dynamic lighting through RTX Remix

A modder has released GTA2 RTX Remix, which brings path tracing and a dynamic day-night cycle to Grand Theft Auto 2. The mod uses a custom Direct3D 9 renderer and two DLLs to bridge the game's legacy graphics APIs with Nvidia's RTX Remix. It aims to modernize the 1999 top-down title while preserving its gameplay.
Grand Theft Auto 2 arrived in 1999 using DirectDraw and an early Direct3D version. RTX Remix lacks native DirectDraw support and works with Direct3D 9, so a compatibility layer is needed. The modder created a Direct3D 9 renderer plus gta2dx9.dll and gta2dx9_vid.dll to translate the old graphics pipeline. This allows RTX Remix to read the game live and apply path tracing.
It also adds 16:9 widescreen, frame rates up to 60 FPS through frame generation, and reduced edge pop-in. A dynamic day-night cycle, plus light sources for explosions, vehicle fires, and neon signs, is included. Pressing F4 opens a lighting menu. The open-source mod needs a GTA 2 copy and was tested with version 9.6.
This mod could affect retro PC gamers and preservation-minded players by making a 1999 title more visually accessible on modern displays, though it may require RTX-capable hardware. It may also encourage modders to build similar compatibility layers for other legacy games, extending RTX Remix’s reach. For Nvidia, such projects could demonstrate the platform’s flexibility, while rights holders might see renewed interest in older catalog titles. The impact likely remains niche, centered on enthusiasts rather than mainstream players.
