Ukraine's military reports Russian troop losses near 1.53 million since invasion

Ukraine’s General Staff said on Sept. 27 that Russian forces have suffered about 1,528,970 personnel losses since the February 2022 invasion, including 1,690 in the previous day. Its tally also lists 12,384 tanks, 25,442 armored combat vehicles, 50,428 artillery systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, and two submarines, among other equipment.
Kyiv does not disclose its own military losses, citing secrecy for operational reasons. Western assessments cited in the report indicate Russian casualties far exceed Ukrainian ones; CSIS placed the ratio around 2.5:1 or 2:1 and estimated 500,000–600,000 Ukrainian casualties through December 2025, including 100,000–140,000 killed. Zelensky said in February that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in action.
The reported casualty figures may shape public understanding of the war’s human cost in Ukraine and Russia, affecting families, veterans, and communities awaiting missing soldiers.
