ESMA to start supervising AI and tokenisation use in 2027

The European Securities and Markets Authority will launch a new Union Strategic Supervisory Priority on digital innovation in 2027. Its initial focus will be how regulated firms deploy artificial intelligence and tokenisation. The priority will operate alongside the existing cyber and operational resilience work, while ESMA wraps up its ESG disclosures priority.
ESMA will introduce a Union Strategic Supervisory Priority on digital innovation in 2027. It will initially examine regulated firms' use of AI and tokenisation. This priority will coexist with cyber and operational resilience work that began in 2025, while ESMA finishes its ESG disclosures priority launched in 2023.
National regulators will first identify AI and tokenisation deployment in customer-facing products and processes, then inspect selected highly exposed firms and assess where tokenisation is actually being adopted. ESMA will coordinate with National Competent Authorities.
The shift may affect investors, financial firms, and national supervisors. Investors could gain from more consistent scrutiny of AI-driven services and tokenised products, potentially reducing hidden risks. Firms may face added compliance work and clearer expectations. Supervisors might need new expertise. If oversight lags, uneven adoption across EU markets could create gaps, but coordinated checks may improve trust.
