Shotwell sells $52.5M in SpaceX shares before Starship orbital attempt

Gwynne Shotwell sold $52.5 million of SpaceX stock on 22 September 2026 under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted three months earlier. She exercised options for 342,170 shares and sold them the same day through Morgan Stanley at roughly $151 to $155 per share. Shotwell still holds about 5.58 million shares, worth around $830 million, as Starship Flight 14 and an IPO lock-up expiration approach.
A Form 4 filed Sept 24 showed SpaceX President/COO Gwynne Shotwell exercised options on 342,170 shares at $8.40-$19.40, about $4.5M, then sold all same day via Morgan Stanley at $151-$155, generating $52.5M. The sale followed a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted June 23, 2026, so it was scheduled months earlier.
Afterward, she retained roughly 5.58M shares valued near $830M based on Friday's $148.68 close. The transaction came before Starship Flight 14, set for Sept 28 from Starbase, Texas, carrying 26 Starlink satellites, and near Sept 24 IPO lock-up release of about 328M shares. It was first notable executive sale since June Nasdaq listing.
Shotwell's preplanned sale and the lock-up expiration could add supply and shape investor sentiment around SpaceX shares. A Starship orbital success or failure may affect confidence in commercial space, indirectly touching employees, suppliers, and investors. Because the sale was scheduled under a 10b5-1 plan, it may be read as routine rather than a signal, though market participants could still react to timing near major events.
