Could One HPV Shot Be Enough? Experts Revisit Vaccine Guidance
Experts are considering whether a single HPV vaccine dose may suffice for preteens instead of the current two-dose schedule. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. and is linked to about 50,000 cancer cases annually, including roughly 90% of cervical and anal cancers. The first HPV vaccine was approved in 2006, and recommendations have been revised before.
HPV ranks as the most frequently reported sexually transmitted infection nationwide. More than 40 viral types can affect male and female genital tissue and the mouth and throat lining. Some strains account for most genital warts, and the virus contributes to nearly 50,000 U.S. cancer diagnoses yearly, including roughly 90% of cervical and anal cancers.
The first shot, Gardasil, received federal approval in 2006; Cervarix arrived in 2009. Early guidance covered girls with three doses, boys were added in 2011, and later research supported reducing the schedule to two shots spaced six to 12 months apart. Multiple countries have since recorded drops in infections, genital warts, and precancerous cervical lesions.
A move toward one HPV dose could affect preteens, parents, clinicians, and public health programs. Fewer shots may mean less discomfort and simpler scheduling, potentially improving completion rates among families who face access barriers. It may also ease logistics. Yet experts would need to weigh whether reduced dosing preserves long-term cancer protection, so any change may unfold cautiously and with continued monitoring.
