Its system can flag engine, muffler, horn, and music violations; muffler penalties start at $800 and can reach $2,625.
New York's equipment comes from U.K.-based Intelligent Instruments, maker of SoundVue, which pairs microphone arrays with cameras and plate recognition. Knoxville, Tennessee, has used a mobile version that records time, location, vehicle type, and plate, though it currently supports warnings rather than citations. Santa Fe also uses a Jenoptik mobile trailer for speeding and excessive noise.
Noise-camera programs could affect residents seeking quieter streets, drivers who may receive warnings or fines, and local agencies balancing enforcement with privacy and cost concerns. If expanded, they may shift some noise complaints from police response to automated review, potentially changing how quickly cases are handled.
