Nvidia-branded trailers stolen, but cargo was 20 tons of sand
Two trailers bearing Nvidia and PlusAI markings were taken from outside an autonomous trucking startup’s warehouse. Instead of AI GPUs, each trailer held 20,000 pounds of sand used to simulate loaded cargo during road testing. The startup said the sand was recovered intact, while its truck cabs with advanced hardware had been stored securely indoors.
PlusAI, an autonomous trucking company collaborating with Nvidia, marks some equipment with both brands. Two of its trailers were taken from outside a warehouse and later located nearby. Each held 20,000 pounds of sand, totaling 40,000 pounds, intended as simulated cargo for road-testing research. The cabs, which likely contained sophisticated AI hardware, were kept indoors.
The theft came to light when an executive heard from an acquaintance who spotted the trailers about half a mile from the facility, prompting police involvement. The sand was recovered undamaged. The incident reflects broader concern over cargo crime as AI infrastructure demand raises the value of computing components and related hardware.
This episode may highlight how AI supply-chain anxiety can inflate perceived value of branded cargo, affecting logistics firms, startups, insurers, and local communities.
