Hong Kong hosted a “sperm race” event with eight men to draw attention to declining male reproductive health. The Hong Kong contest took place in Central, drawing hundreds on site and reportedly more than 900 registrations. Eight men entered a bracket with quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final. Their samples were examined, then shown to viewers as if swimming toward a simulated egg through a microscopic setup.
The event reflects broader worries about male reproductive health. A review of 223 studies found average sperm concentration among non-fertility-selected men dropped 51.6% from 1973 to 2018. Possible contributors include environment, lifestyle, obesity, smoking, heat, and hormone-disrupting chemicals. A 2026 paper considered whether such competitions can raise public awareness. Organizers note race results are not medical diagnoses.
