The film's lifetime worldwide gross now sits at $2.885 billion, second only to "Avatar" at $2.92 billion.
"Resident Evil" placed second with $23 million, down 60% from its $60 million opening. Zach Cregger's reboot has earned $103.4 million domestically and $196.5 million worldwide. A Brad Pitt film came third, ahead of a Robert Pattinson title, while three new wide releases also entered the marketplace.
The strong encore performance may reinforce studios' interest in limited re-releases, especially when tied to upcoming franchise installments. Theater owners could benefit from filling screens during quieter weekends, while Imax and premium-format venues may see added demand.
