Nubank Said to Explore Purchase of British Lender Monzo
Sky News reported that Nubank is negotiating to acquire Monzo, with a possible valuation between £8bn and £10bn. Neither company has confirmed the talks, and any deal would require UK regulatory and shareholder approval. Advent International has also held early discussions about a minority stake in Monzo.
Sky News reported this weekend that Nubank is negotiating to acquire Monzo, valuing the UK digital bank at £8bn–£10bn, or roughly US$10.6bn–US$13.25bn. Neither company confirmed the talks; Nubank declined to address speculation, while Monzo would not comment. Any transaction would need UK regulatory and shareholder approval.
Advent International has also held early discussions about a minority Monzo stake, reportedly viable only if the Nubank talks fail. Nubank serves over 110 million customers and is listed in New York; Monzo reported 15.2 million customers and £25.7bn deposits in its 2026 accounts. Monzo’s board is also considering a funding round for European expansion.
If completed, a Nubank-Monzo deal could reshape competition in UK and Latin American digital banking, potentially giving UK customers access to a larger global platform while raising questions about service, jobs, and data governance. Monzo’s 15.2 million customers, Nubank’s 110 million users, employees, and fintech rivals may feel effects. Regulators could scrutinise market concentration and consumer protections. Advent’s interest may signal continued private-equity appetite, but outcomes remain uncertain.
