UK Maintains Cuba Travel Warning as Power Cuts and Cash Shortages Persist
The UK Foreign Office updated its Cuba travel guidance on 25 September and kept its warning against non-essential travel. The revised advice cites frequent protests, possible power grid failures, only one operating terminal at Havana's airport, and a cash-only system for visitors. It tells travelers to bring enough cash for their stay and emergencies and to check that their insurance covers Cuba.
Cuba has long appealed to British and European holidaymakers, yet foreign arrivals fell 64.4 percent in the first eight months of 2026. Since 11 February 2026, Britain has discouraged travel except when necessary, after fuel shortages affected flights, electricity and water supplies.
A review published on 25 September retained that warning while revising many sections. It cites protests, possible grid failures, a single working terminal at Havana’s airport and a cash-dependent visitor economy. Travellers must declare foreign currency above US$5,000 and file an online arrival form within 72 hours before entry.
The unchanged warning may further reduce tourist arrivals, affecting Cuban households, private hosts, taxi drivers, restaurants and others tied to visitor spending. With cash-reliant conditions and power uncertainty, travellers could face disruptions, while locals may see fewer jobs and income. Insurance gaps could leave some Britons exposed if they travel despite advice. The next review and return of suspended airlines may shape whether pressure eases or deepens.
