Wolfspeed Launches Premium 200 mm Silicon Carbide Substrates

Wolfspeed has made its new Premium 200 mm n-type silicon carbide substrate commercially available, adding a higher-quality material to its 200 mm SiC portfolio. The substrate is designed to reduce defects and improve wafer-shape stability, which can help device makers achieve better yields. Wolfspeed says it can scale production at its existing silicon carbide manufacturing facility as demand increases.
Wolfspeed has begun selling a Premium 200 mm n-type silicon carbide substrate, adding a higher-grade option to its existing 200 mm SiC materials lineup. The company says the material targets fewer defects and more consistent wafer shape, which may help chipmakers improve yields as SiC devices move toward higher voltages and larger die sizes.
The substrate is specified at under 0.01 micropipes per square centimeter—fewer than three per wafer—using X-ray topography, with low threading screw dislocations. Wolfspeed says it can increase output from its established large-scale SiC plant, where 200 mm production has run since 2022, and the product is available to order now.
This could matter to electric-vehicle, industrial power, and renewable-energy supply chains because SiC devices support efficient power conversion. If the substrate improves yields, device makers may face fewer qualification delays and lower material waste, potentially easing costs and availability over time. Workers and suppliers in advanced semiconductor manufacturing may see demand shifts, while consumers could benefit indirectly through more reliable, efficient power electronics.
