Carriers are adding temporary fuel surcharges as crude strengthened and refinery outages or maintenance limited diesel-making capacity. Middle distillate stockpiles remain low at major hubs, while truck freight and global shipping demand keep supplies tight.
Diesel production is more complex because ultra-low sulfur fuel depends on specific refinery units. Winter heating and harvest fuel needs can further squeeze availability. Traders compare diesel and gasoline spreads and monitor hub inventories. Similar energy shocks in 2008 and 2021–2022 previously fed headline inflation.
Higher diesel costs could weigh on trucking firms, farmers, builders, and retailers through fuel surcharges and transport expenses. Those added costs may gradually reach consumers through goods prices, affecting household budgets and inflation expectations.
