Zambian Bank Launches $100 Million Sustainability Bond With UK Backing
Zambia National Commercial Bank has introduced a $100 million medium-term note program for environmental and social projects. The first $50 million tranche is planned as a private placement, with British International Investment committing $15 million and technical support. Eligible areas include renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, energy efficiency, small business finance, housing, healthcare and education.
Zanaco’s $100 million medium-term note programme, announced on 23 September 2026, opens with a $50 million private placement aimed at institutional buyers. A second $50 million portion is expected later, with its uses to be disclosed at issuance. The Lusaka Securities Exchange called it the first sustainability bond from a Zambian bank.
British International Investment pledged $15 million to the first tranche and helped develop the framework. The two institutions already had a $50 million loan relationship, including an initial $30 million for micro, small and medium enterprises and climate projects. Zanaco had outlined the programme in October 2025 as a private placement followed by a public offer.
The bond may expand financing for renewable energy, climate-smart farming, energy efficiency, small businesses, housing, healthcare, and education in Zambia. Borrowers and communities linked to those sectors could benefit if funds reach projects, while local banks and investors may gain experience in sustainability reporting. Development partners might use the framework to support more measurable projects. However, actual social impact may depend on disbursement, project selection, and verification.
