Buterin says Ethereum’s 2027 Hegotá could be final standard fork

Vitalik Buterin indicated that Ethereum’s planned 2027 Hegotá upgrade may be its last conventional fork before the network moves toward quantum-safe cryptography. The roadmap already includes post-quantum work on validator and account signatures, data-availability commitments, and zero-knowledge proof systems. The Ethereum Foundation created a dedicated post-quantum security team earlier in 2026.
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, has framed the 2027 Hegotá release as possibly the network’s final traditional fork. After that, Ethereum’s direction points toward cryptography designed to resist quantum-computing threats. The roadmap already lists work on signatures used by validators and accounts, data-availability commitments, and zero-knowledge proof systems.
Earlier in 2026, the Ethereum Foundation set up a team focused specifically on post-quantum security. The coverage noted that market participants saw the shift as potentially strengthening Ethereum’s long-term value case, while progress updates and the network’s price path through late 2026 remain areas to monitor.
Ethereum’s move toward quantum-resistant cryptography could affect developers, validators, wallet providers, and users who rely on its security guarantees. If successful, it may help preserve trust in decentralized finance and digital asset infrastructure as quantum computing advances. The transition could also require technical migrations and coordination, potentially creating short-term complexity for ecosystem participants. Broader society may feel indirect effects through the resilience of blockchain-based services, though the timeline and outcomes remain uncertain.
