22-year-old founder's Mach Industries reaches $3.7B valuation

Ethan Thornton launched Mach Industries at 19, and the defense tech startup has now raised $600 million in a Series C extension at a $3.7 billion valuation. Mach builds autonomous defense systems and has six weapons programs, a 115,000-square-foot facility, and a deal with the Army Applications Laboratory. The company is shifting from development to production as defense tech investment booms.
Ethan Thornton, 22, founded Mach Industries in 2023 at age 19. Raised in a military family in Texas, he began prototyping defense applications at 16 on his parents' property, experimenting with hydrogen-powered weapons using materials from Home Depot and Amazon. He studied aerospace at MIT and worked with Lincoln Laboratory before a Thiel Fellowship led him to leave school and focus on the company full-time.
Sequoia Capital led a $5.7 million round in June 2023, its first investment in a hardware defense company. The Series C extension more than doubled Mach's valuation from $1.8 billion three months earlier.
Mach's trajectory could signal how quickly young founders and private capital may reshape defense development, potentially compressing timelines that traditionally stretched over years. Workers in aerospace and manufacturing hubs like Huntington Beach may see new opportunities, while the shift toward autonomous weapons systems could raise questions about oversight and accountability that policymakers and the public may eventually need to weigh. Investors may find validation in the sector's momentum, though rapid valuation growth could also invite closer scrutiny.
