Quartermaster raises $140M to expand maritime surveillance network

Quartermaster, an Arlington, Virginia-based maritime intelligence startup, has raised a $140 million Series B after closing a $43 million Series A in May. Insight Partners preempted the round, with participation from Overmatch Ventures, First Round Capital, and a $40 million debt facility from Stifel. The company's SmartMast hardware uses cameras and radios to provide real-time maritime data beyond AIS for governments, shipping companies, and insurers.
Quartermaster, based in Arlington, Virginia, moved from a $43 million Series A in May to a $140 million Series B. Insight Partners led the later round, joined by Overmatch Ventures, First Round Capital, and a $40 million Stifel debt facility. Interest grew amid shipping disruptions tied to the Iran war.
Its SmartMast combines cameras and radios on vessel masts to deliver live maritime intelligence beyond AIS tracking. CEO Neil Sobin said more than 650 ships across 25 countries now carry the system, with over 800 units shipped and manufacturing capacity doubled.
Better maritime awareness could help crews, port operators, insurers, and coastal authorities reduce collisions, track congestion, and support rescues. It may also raise privacy or surveillance concerns for vessels and crews if data use expands. The technology's effect depends on how access is governed and whether benefits reach smaller operators, not just large fleets and governments.
